Letter from the Chair
What does RESO do for the real estate industry? Ask that question in a room full of top real estate executives and you may be surprised by the answers, so I want to reflect upon our accomplishments.
We are the group that created and continue to evolve the RESO Data Dictionary, which has freed technologists from the tortures of mapping MLS data fields for weeks on end.
We have moved from the proprietary RETS data transport to a modern API protocol that we can proudly share with proptech pros.
RESO has done incredible things and continues to aggressively move to where problems exist in order to solve them. The RESO Web API hit a major milestone this year: More than one million MLS subscribers served. That is nearly 60 percent of all U.S.-based subscribers, a figure that was stuck at 4 percent just four years ago!
It gets better. More than 60 percent of U.S. MLS subscribers are covered by Data Dictionary 2.0 certification in just its first year, and that figure will grow quickly as a few more providers are just finishing up.
There is more:
- RESO certification and data alignment has never been more meaningful or transparent through RESO Analytics and Alignment Reports. These products provide MLS executives with knowledge about how they compare to industry averages, how MLS providers compare to each other and how MLSs in comparable markets align for possible data share initiatives.
- The RESO Universal Parcel Identifier (UPI) has been implemented by multiple organizations to provide a unifying ID that connects disparate systems, reducing the duplication of listings and days spent cleaning data.
- RESO’s educational courses, RED-B and RED-CA, have been success stories in helping new entrants into our industry understand how data actually flows.
- Conferences have expanded from a borrowed room at the NAR building in Chicago to major venues across the country.
- International real estate practitioners have invited RESO to help bring the MLS concept to the world…profitably!
And yet, just like the MLS itself, RESO is not always widely understood.
RESO creates interoperable methods to achieve efficient and seamless technology for the real estate marketplace. Just as I do as an MLS CEO, I serve RESO by the will of the brokerage community and the consumers that they serve. With that audience as our North Star, RESO has a bright future.

Data Dictionary
The following items were approved via virtual vote for Data Dictionary 2.1 or 2.2.
Data Dictionary Payload Additions (Data Dictionary 2.1) – Adding payload tags (similar to IDX) to fields that would typically be used in Association Management Systems and Offer Management.
webp MediaType (Data Dictionary 2.2): Adding new lookup in the MediaType.
High-Speed Internet (Data Dictionary 2.2) – Communicates availability and details of broadband Internet service(s) and includes the following related fields: InternetConnectivityYN, InternetConnectivityType, InternetConnectivityMaxDownloadSpeed, InternetConnectivityMaxUploadSpeed and InternetConnectivitySpeedUnits.
Geocode Fields and Lookups (Data Dictionary 2.2) – Communicates the source of geocode data and other information to downstream data consumers and includes the following related fields: GeocodeSource, GeocodeDisplayYN, GeocodeManualYN and GeocodeDoNotAlterYN.
